Random Recommended Listen
PacificUV - Weekends
For this week's Random Recommended Listen, we are straying a bit from the norm and featuring a new release as opposed to an older endeavor. One of the rewarding aspects about being devoted to music and writing about, is the discovery of new material. Granted, if one spends enough time discovering and critiquing, the pool of ear-candy seems to dwindle more and more rapidly. However, what keeps one going is the fact that every once in a while, one will find something that peaks your interest and basically reaffirms what you are doing. One could relate this addiction to new sounds as being similar to someone who is addicted to addictive drugs; the folks who need to constantly get high because they are trying to relive that feeling they had the first time they rocked heroin. Well, fellow reader, this week i have discovered, not heroin but, a nice little gem of an album by the Athens Georgia dream/space-popish Pacific UV.
Weekends is the 3rd full-length from the group and, unfortunately, i cannot comment on what the previous outings sound like because I literally just stumbled upon them. However, i can comment on the sound and atmosphere of Weekends: What we have here is a little bit Spiritualized, a little bit Air, a little bit Beta Band and a little bit Postal Service. What comes out is a great winter listen laced with floating/space-y tunes that warms your innards and makes one feel pretty good. Simplistically processed beats and soaring keyboards release to floating vocals, that don't necessarily feel like they are coming from above, but you know they defy gravity and are...somewhere.
I will warn, weekends will not change your life, but it seems to be a pretty solid musical release in the otherwise dreadful January that we have had so far. To Sum this album up, if you are familiar with and absolutely adore "Ladies and Gentlemen, We Are Floating In Space" by Spiritualized (an all-time favorite of this author), then PacificUV will be right up you alley because each tune almost seems to be a slightly different remembrance of that tune.
